Scuola Napoli

Biography:

The DBE Course aims to train professionals designers capable of managing the innovation of products and systems, able to support the strategic purpose of the project in all areas of design application and in emerging areas that express demand for advanced design skills, in industrial production, evolved crafts, interior, urban spaces and staging design for the enhancement of Cultural Heritage. The DBE Course is directed to train innovative and experimental profiles towards emerging fields like "strategic design" and "design services". Developing studies where there is hybridization of design skills with those managerial linked to production of new categories of products/services, such as the "Design Management" and the "engineering design".

Concept:

As part of the Modeling and Prototyping Laboratory held by Sergio Pone and Mara Capone (collaborators Emanuela Lanzara and Davide Ercolano) - DBE - Master of Science in Design for the Built Environment - a design method was explored that aimed to explore the potential of an innovative production process: the pieces needed to make the prototypes of 5 lamps obtained by transforming a known and cheap lamp available on the market were made using the AM (additive manufacturing) technique. The design of the individual lamps starts from the study of the possible transformations of this product: by adding further elements we obtain KURI, turning the reference lamp upside down and designing the support we obtain STERNUM, designing a system to connect two reference lamps we obtain CAGE, overturning the lighting fixture and by designing two connection elements between them, thanks to a careful geometric study, CLEPSI is obtained, covering with a series of elements the reference lamp obtains REBIRTH. Using an innovative production process, the 5 lamps were designed to be printed using the AM technique. The solutions have been defined in relation to the available instrumentation and technology. The material used is the PLA. Geometry has guided the design process with the aim of simplifying assembly and enabling printing.

Products:

Cage
is a suspension lamp, which can be horizontally or vertically oriented: the purpose is to create a diffused light.Combining a pair of reference lamps used for the experiment, the final system is composed of two "cages" connected with 19 bands. The geometry guides the entire process: the bands are flat sections of an ideal digital surface obtained through a reverse modeling process of the starting lamp. The flat faces allow 3D printing. The bands appear as curves strips thanks to the strategic inclination of the plans.
