Biography:

With a degree in Classical Studies, and strongly influenced by ancient history, surrealism and goth/steampunk imagery, Christine works to create jewelry that challenges one's perspective of adornment. She works primarily in sterling silver, brass and bronze, with the regular addition of gemstones and pearls to provide contrast against the metalwork. Each piece is individually cut, shaped and textured with simple tools to ensure its uniqueness and organic quality. Christine is inspired by movement, by abstract shapes, by themes of whimsy or darkness. She works to create pieces that evoke rich feelings, choosing to achieve deep personal connections with her jewelry rather than highlighting textbook techniques. Christine has been invited to create collections for three seasons of Vancouver Fashion Week, and was asked by a noted LA stylist to send a collection of jewelry for celebrity red carpet events. Elle Canada has said she was a designer to watch. She has had her jewelry featured in published magazine fashion editorials, where it has been recognized for its uniqueness internationally in magazines in Italy, the US, and the Ukraine.

Concept:

Slate Jewelry by Christine Rio presents a sophisticated collection of modern earrings. This collection is focused on basic geometric shapes contrasted with oppposing textures. For example, brushed satin finishes that hearken to softness are paired with harder edge basic shapes. Feminine flowing shapes have been given dark patinas. As with all of Christine’s work, these earrings are infused with a feeling of being relics, of having been recently unearthed. All her work has an intentional distressed quality, even with the most modern of designs, that strives to show that there is much beauty to be found, in all the imperfection we may see around us.
