Cipher and Neverending Glory

LASVIT, the progressive Czech based manufacturer of glass artworks and Yabu Pushelberg, one of the most recognized design firms worldwide, first joined forces on a hospitality industry project for the Four Seasons Kuwait that lead the two companies in a new direction. Realizing that they shared a common vision of celebrating quality craftsmanship and exceptional design, they teamed up to create a new lighting collection titled Cipher, to be premiered at the Euroluce fair in Milan.

Yabu Pushelberg’s creative approach was always driven by the belief that anything is possible, corresponding with LASVIT´s philosophy of combining traditional glassmaking techniques with cutting-edge ideas and inspirations. This is further informed by an attention to detail and endless curiosity fostered through partnerships with equally thoughtful, creative, like-minded people and companies. Cipher collection exemplifies LASVIT´s and Yabu Pushelberg’s design approach and passion for top-level craftsmanship. The resulting Cipher collection is a juxtaposition of heritage techniques and contemporary form. Its delicate hand-blown crystal cylindrical pieces are cut with clean, clear lines. “The surface decoration was influenced by our fascination and exploration of the way in which etched patterning catches light,” the designers explained.

“We wanted to celebrate the inherent beauty of cut crystal and the versatility of textures. We looked for ways to create different qualities of light. The form began as an extruded hexagon, but its edges were ultimately softened and smoothed to create cylindrical forms.”

Light emits only from connection points and the sources are ingeniously hidden to soften the overall effect. With components arranged in series and joined by polished champagne-gold finished connections, Cipher’s overall linear form creates a poetic visual rhythm. As a system, the Cipher collection is extremely flexible and customizable, with limitless possible configurations for private residences and bespoke installations projects.

The designers Jan Plecháč and Henry Wielgus sketched the shape of the chandeliers by rotating the silhouette around its own axis. In the individual silhouettes, it is possible to recognize iconic chandeliers from five of the world’s most eminent concert halls and theatres; La Scala in Milan, Palais Garnier in Paris, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Czech Republic’s Estates Theater in Prague, and indeed the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Thanks to the Neverending Glory collection, everyone can enjoy this piece of history in their own home. “The idea of Neverending Glory collection came to us when we realized how many amazing old crystal chandeliers there are, and that it would be beautiful to bring them to a contemporary form and into modern homes,” says designer Henry Wielgus.
