The acronym C.U.B stands for the union of Leather and Wood, Cuir Union Bois in French. Our studio is the result of collaboration between two artisan-designers : Sophie Gailliot: leather craftsman, and Richard Pontais: cabinetmaker.
Native from France, they moved first to Casablanca and then to Montréal where they live for 6 years. Both trained in arts after career paths in graphic arts and audiovisual media. They started a few years later in studying at the School of leather crafts and the School of Art Woodworking in Montreal. The result from their eclectic life experience and various inspirations in painting, photography and achitecture such as Karl Blossfeldt, Bernd and Hilla Becher or Vassily Kandinsky, is a unique shape in their furniture pieces. Here at Atelier C.U.B we combine wood and leather with a splash of design to create warm modern furniture pieces. We develop and create objects, accessories and furniture either as one of a kind pieces or individual small series.
This collection made up of accessories and furnitures is playing with geometric shapes, contrast of textures and also with colors of wood and leather. Inspired by organic shapes and architectural lines, the mix of both create a unique design.
«The Hanging Garden»
Suspended lamp with a geometric and architectural structure. Inspired by the atmosphere of Marguerite Duras’s novels in Indochina and Vietnamese umbrellas and conicals hats. It plays with the contrast of wood and leather, round shape or folding for a balance and harmony game. This lamp is a travel and daydream invitation.
«Bossanova»
This evening bag combined traditionnal method of work and new technology. Indeed the laser cutted geometric pattern, that we have revisited in a modern way, evokes the braiding of the rattan. Chic as well as singular, its design is inpired by the Vox guitar amplifier. This lamp with a simple design was inspired by wooden construction games. It allows a warm atmosphere.
