Hug Collection

Designed by Giulio Iacchetti

Beyond the threshold: the Hug collection designed by Giulio Iacchetti is heading outdoors and rediscovering tradition in a contemporary form.

A monochrome look is employed in all Fantin collections to customize minimalist designs with meticulous use of colour. Capable of adding character and versatility to every single product, the vast selection of finishes ranges from neutral shades to the most vibrant tones and it has never stopped evolving through the years.

For more than 50 years, Fantin has been making genuinely sustainable products built on values such as solidity, durability and the scope for disassembly and reassembly, as well as the natural recyclability of metal characteristics obviously also recognisable in the Hug collection.

Behind the Hug collection by Fantin are in-depth design deliberations regarding the theme of crossing, upon which Giulio Iacchetti first embarked back in 2011, during a solo exhibition called Cruciale – 20 Crosses by Giulio Iacchetti at the Diocesan Museum in Milan. It has a structural role that the designer sees generating “a system; a new alphabet that we can use to write a whole host of things, including stories we can’t even imagine yet.” Slightly slanting round tube vertical pieces literally hug a horizontal frame with the same cross section, in a combination that has a highly distinctive look and also comprehensively performs its structural role.

From this year, the round tables (ø 80/120, H. 76 cm), the tall bar table (ø 80, H. 110 cm) and the stools (ø 35 cm, H. 47/65/75 cm) in the collection are also available for outdoor use, thanks to special features that prevent pools of water from forming and electrophoretic painting processes that provide outstanding protection from the elements.

The range has been extended this year thanks to the addition of a selection of coat stands, hooks and racks featuring large metal discs, which can be customised with all of the colours in the Fantin palette. The simple, linear creations are like “silent servants remembered as a traditional part of the home. Fantin makes them into a highly contemporary part of everyday life, with a more carefree, pop image,” explains Iacchetti.

First up is a single coat hook that by itself is a way to adorn a wall by adding a dash of colour. Then there is a masterfully bent piece of sheet metal rounded off with a rim on the hat rack.

Finally, there is a coat stand: “A very linear item that really makes an impact,” continues Iacchetti. “It’s extremely simple: just three static vertical pieces – essential for its stability – gently converge and are held together by the embrace of a horizontal tube. Using the same hook designed for the table two years ago, it is possible to hang not only bags but also items such as coat hangers and umbrellas from it. These additional functions underline the item’s huge potential.”

FANTIN
Since 1968, Fantin has been passionately creating metal furniture and solutions that are renowned on the market for one key value: quality, which in this case means a blend of visual appeal, solidity and environmental friendliness. Great attention to detail is shown in both the technical features and the appearance of all items of Fantin furniture, which are capable of fitting into a wide range of settings: from homes to offices, public spaces and industrial locations. The secret to their versatile nature lies in the fact that every single product can be customised to cater to even the most complex demands. The combination of ingenious design and bespoke quality has given rise to prestigious partnerships all over the world.

GIULIO IACCHETTI – INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER
Giulio Iacchetti has been working as an industrial designer for a range of brands since 1992. Among his distinguishing features are his dedication to research and his reputation for creating new types of objects such as the Moscardino: a biodegradable, multi-purpose piece of cutlery that he designed with Matteo Ragni for Pandora Design. It won the Compasso d’Oro design award in 2001. In 2009 the President of Italy presented him with the Premio dei Premi innovation award for taking his designer creations into supermarkets with the Eureka Coop project. In May 2009, he put on a solo exhibition at the Triennale di Milano museum that was entitled “Giulio Iacchetti: Disobedient Objects”. He has carried out personal research into new design topics such as the cross. This gave rise to an exhibition called “Cruciale – 20 Crosses by Giulio Iacchetti”, which was held at the Diocesan Museum in Milan, the Basilica of Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome and the Castello di Lombardia in Enna. In 2014 Giulio Iacchetti won his second Compasso d’Oro award for the Sfera range of manhole covers that he designed with Matteo Ragni for Montini.
