PROFILO PROFESSIONALE
CONCEPT
‘I utilize
local social-economic and cultural values on the concept of my work. The
alternative processes and techniques of solving problems, on a pragmatic basis,
aiming only at functionality to the detriment of form, deceive the privation of
economic and technological resources. Thus, the so-called Brazilian
“find-a-way”, as an idiosyncratic
feature, gives place to the empirical
making, immediate need and improvisation that implicate in presupposition to
conceiving a unique and original aesthetics.’
BIOGRAPHY
Duda
Carvalho was
born on March 17, 1968 in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. His father was a furniture maker and his mother was an upholsterer, both
proprietors of a small furniture industry in town. He spent part of his
childhood watching his parents designing and producing chairs, tables, beds and
bookcases. On second grade he studied Architecture Drawing at a local
Polytechnic School. Soon afterwards he began to work for several interior
stores designing furniture and planning spaces for a while. During that time he
earned some practice and expertise. A couple of years later he chose to
graduate in Languages, another passion of his. He partially quit his prior
occupation to dedicate himself to teaching languages. Yet he continued doing
furniture and product design courses, sketching and designing objects as a
hobby. At that time he also entered unpretentiously some important National
Home Design Prizes Contests, Museu da
Casa Brasileira and A Casa Museu do
Objeto Brasileiro. After a trip to Europe for studying purposes, Duda came
back determined to engage as a professional designer and not to deny his
genetic heritage anymore, “a chip off the old block”. First of all he needed to
delve into the subject itself. So he enrolled in college again and majored in
Interior Design. After that he did another course in the same area to obtain an
overseas certificate. What should be in the wrong way of his current career,
his graduation in Languages has become a differentiation because now he is able
to ally the knowledge he acquired from Human Sciences with Art and Technics. At
his modest 35 square meters studio today, Duda researches the roots of his Brazilian
cultural class at depth to extract precious components to develop his design
works, interior products, furniture and home accessories, turned to the
contemporary sector of the market.
