The name SICHT [view] refers to both the beautiful vista
towards Feldberg in the Taunus mountain range, and also
in a meteorological sense to the visibility being
ascertained. Light and clear air are essential to the
visibility of remote objects. The look-out in the weather
station park combines the aspects of view and visibility
and uses them to explain atmospheric opacity and to
observe the weather conditions and its bad weather fronts.
The look-out is a slightly off kilter three-legged
construction that seems to lean on a fourth support, a
steeply ascending metal stair. The design was inspired by
weather instruments balanced on a tripod, so that it
‘symbolizes the function of observing and analyzing’. The
observation deck stands on the three steel columns that
are made more visible by red and white swirls that give the
impression of a construction zone. The platform is 10
metres above ground level and, in clear conditions,
visitors can obtain a view over 30 kilometres. The angular
metal shape acts as an open-air picture frame, holding
the outspread landscape within its limits. It is pointed in
the direction of Frankfurt and natural and manmade
landmarks, such as the Taunus mountains and city
skyscrapers, are used for reference on the information
panels.
