Cuci.nato, is a project brought to life by Maria Chiara Casarotto and Teresa Palmiere, thanks to the “Tasteful” workshop, held in Verona from 22nd to 26th November in 2011 and guided by FormaFantasma designers. During this workshop Maria Chiara and Teresa, in their first artisitic collaboration, decided to extract natural colours and pigments from differents kind of edible materials and common foods, analyzing in this way food as a source of color. Turnips, Saffron, wines, onions and other aliments are boiled and filtered to obtain a surprising “palette” of colours. These dyes are then used to design a new understanding of the tablecloth. The ‘recipes’ of these tinctures are translated into percentages of colour where typical local recipes are being investigated by the emotional charge of the specific colours they exhibit. If during the days of “Tastefull” the foods on show and therefore these recipes exhibited were a true reflection of the Veneto culinary tradition (with tablecloths that gave new life to such age-old dishes as radish risotto with red wine or Black squid ink risotto), Teresa e Maria Chiara intend to continue with their research and exploration, creating a map of all italian regions, through a journey of recipes an pigments. In the future they will attempt to further widen the horizons of the project, pushing with their search outside Italy, exploring the culinary traditions of other lands. One keyword of the project is definitely the term – locality. Maria Chiara and Teresa are in fact interested in discovering the links between different territories and their pigments. In regards however to the techniques of extraction of these dyes and fixing of them to materials , the two young designers have found their very inspiration in the past, when extracting the colors they have infact utlised the simple techniques of boiling of foodstuffs, and for to fix these hues, made use of the very common table salt.
